The term 4PL comes from the 3PL concept (third party logistics) by adding a wider dimension in going from a common supplier to one that acts as a catalyst for the improvement in management of resources, capabilities and technology of its own organization as well and that of its customers. The focus lies in the redesign and the structuring of systems and procedures aimed at maximizing the logistics chain.
